What's All The Fuss About!? A Look Into Ford 7.3 Liter Madness

    Last updated 2 years ago

If you have been looking for a tough truck that will keep you on the road and out of the service bays you've probably been recommended to look at the legendary International 7.3 liter turbo diesel V-8 that put Ford in the diesel truck hall of fame! BUT...your next question as you researched book values and pricing vs newer ones was "ummmmm what are these people thinking?" let me unmuddy the water a little bit. Part of the attraction to the older diesel motors is the good old fashioned "less is more" build. Yep, they just don't build them like that anymore applies. The Ford heavy trucks from that era had a lot going for them such as solid frame, body, interior and transmission components to compliment the motor. We've all done this, shopped online and a found a "bargain" trucks too cheap and the salesman or individual said they were the nicest cleanest truck this side of the Red River...but apparently nice is a relative term and you walk away from a pile of $12,000 what used to be a truck. After bopping around the market and trying hard to convince sellers that KBB says their truck is worth half the asking price you step up a little, and behold! For only $5,000 more than that leaking stinking rattle trap you have a decent truck in front of you...but still NADA says..NO! Stop that! Throw those books into the bed of that rotting shell you just walked away from..here's why. The Book values are merely an average of what was sold the last month in the wholesale, retail and auction markets. I know you know that, but these trucks by design were used mainly for heavy applications like oil field use, construction, mudding, deer leases, hauling heavy loads so on and so forth. Well book values work a lot like your school grades did. If you have a ton of Fs (the worked hard variety of trucks), a few Bs (your light work and toy hauler types) and a couple As (we call these pa pa trucks, tend to be elderly driven or city trucks) then you still fail, hence the low book values. Lets take that junk truck for $15,000 and the $20,000 nice one for example. You could buy the better price and do the work it would take to make it nice, maybe $3,000 on the front end because it takes feats of acrobatic dexterity to keep it on the road, new bed for $2,000 because it looks like a pack of Clydesdales used it for a square dance, perhaps the pond of black oil its standing in needs attention and lets say not much.. another $1,000 for the drips and maybe you would prefer working AC so put another pile of cash on the hood and make it nice? No, the extra work, aggravation and such makes the well cared for ones a great value. Remember, these are not Honda Civics whose main design was a simple commute..these are trucks that..well, just look out your window when you drive down the expressway. How many are being worked on construction, pulling heavy loads or heaven forbid a kids got em chipped up and blowing smoke so thick your fog lamps come on. The long and the short of it? These trucks are one of the best built diesel trucks ever, but the biggest factor is who had it, what they used it for and where its from. Quick Tips: Things to look for that might spell trouble Inspect the core support for signs of it being removed. This may mean it had a major mechanical issue that required engine removal. Turn the key to the "on" position without turning the motor on. Make sure all warning lights are operating to avoid hidden issues. When you turn the motor on watch your rear view mirror on passenger side for smoke, this could be an issue. Check for blow by. After a test drive and the motor is at operating temp unscrew the oil cap and watch for excessive smoke, turn oil cap upside down and hold it gently in place over opening, if the cap "hops" you're best bet is to walk away.

Why You Need a Pickup Truck

    Last updated 2 years ago

Trucks are vehicles of unmatched versatility. They have unique features to offer drivers of all lifestyles, and over the years, many of the drawbacks that once plagued trucks have been stripped away to make them ideal for people who wear a lot of hats. Here are three great perks to buying a pickup of your own:

    Safety on the Road

Simply put, trucks are hardier than ordinary compact cars. The advantage of being so large and heavy is that trucks can take a hit better than a lot of other vehicles can. People who regularly find themselves behind the wheel often feel safer in pickups because these drivers know that even if they get into an accident, their chances of being injured are considerably lower than they would be in a typical car.

    Traversing Tough Terrain

Even SUVs can sometimes have a hard time tackling rough terrain. Pickup trucks are some of the most flexible vehicles on the market in this regard. Trucks with four-wheel-drive systems are excellent for navigating obstacle-ridden roads and pressing through difficult off-road terrain. Combined with their great resilience, this makes them one of the best vehicles to have if you’re the type of person who likes traveling off the beaten path.

    Towing and Hauling

Few vehicles are more equipped to carry heavy loads. Pickup trucks have a lot of space that can be used to carry a variety of tools and items. Furthermore, they can be used to tow other vehicles that can’t be used on the road for whatever reason. Whether you’re transporting a boat or helping a friend with his broken-down car, pickups are immensely handy.

In 1972, Billy Railsback opened his very first dealership. Since then, he’s gone on to enrich the lives of Texan motorists by opening two more dealerships. Mike Ward managed the service department of a renowned car franchise in Mesquite before working his way up the ladder and eventually owning the business. The two banded together to create a dealership that would make it easier for drivers in the Dallas/Fort-Worth Metroplex to buy high-quality used cars.
